Objetivo Costly and destructive technologies are used to determine the quality of perishable horticultural produce to satisfy consumer demands and EC Food Quality standards. Farmers, distributors and service providers cite the need for rapid non-destructive QA techniques to aid the industry (worth 20 billion Euro a year). The project proposes to deliver a user- friendly portable aroma detector capable of determining produce quality at any stage in the post-harvest chain. The research objectives are to identify aroma compounds emanating from test produce and to test and select appropriate aroma sensors and an aroma sampling system. Appropriate software and data handling systems will be refined to produce easily interpretable information that identifies the condition of the produce. These sampling, electronic detection and data interpretation systems will be encompassed in a hand-held instrument.
