The challenges of modernity for reindeer management : integration and sustainable development in europe' s subarctic and boreal regions (RENMAN)

Objectif

RENMAN will develop new tools and models of participatory research/planning in reindeer management that will facilitate integrated and sustainable use of living resources in sub arctic/boreal Europe. RENMAN is a direct outgrowth of the participation of key partners in:
(1) the project "Human Environmental Interactions" in the EU Concerted Action ARTERI; and
(2) the IASC workshop on the "Human Role in Reindeer Systems". The project involves rural stakeholders, via local workshops/interviews, in the process of research on topics they have helped to prioritise. Analyses will focus on:
(1) human interactions, in particular indigenous vs. scientific perceptions of arrangement and the transfer of expertise from EU to Russian systems;
(2) the quality and hygienic status of summer pastures, soils and surface waters and implications for animal and human health. The findings will provide better cultural/scientific bases for EU policy implementation in general.
The project was presented and discussed among the consortium during the three participatory workshops held, one each year, in herding communities. Corrections and research strategies were discussed at that time as well during the project coordination committee (PCC) meetings twice a year. The results were presented among the consortium during the final workshop and discussion about common integration regarding the objectives were discussed and planned. A final symposium was held in Rovaniemi in Month 34 which, along with a final PCC meeting in Kiel, Germany in Month 36, were the last steps before the final report, conclusions and recommendations were drafted. The dissemination plans of the results were planned and established concerning the final report and its multilevel conclusions.
