Objective
In the global market, competitiveness of European industry relies upon networked enterprises. Extended enterprises (EE) have been the first step and are often based on centralised models, where some of the actors play a dominant role. The next step are virtual enterprises (VE) , as they provide federated models which involve all partners on a peer-to-peer basis thereby providing major benefits (cost reduction, competitiveness, adaptability, human resources and SMEs empowerment, etc.). The shift from EE to VE implies a deep transformation in terms of business culture, market strategy, business processes, etc. It must rely upon a specialised methodology, a federated supply chain model, an extension of single enterprise algorithms to VE ones, and a networked enterprise technological framework. V-CHAIN will generate these deliverables required for the development of VE.
