External costs of innovative industrial technologies

Objectif

The final objective of this proposal is to evaluate the major externalities related to specific innovative industrial technologies. The methodology proposed consists in the extension and application of assessment methods developed in the ExternE research project (JOULE programme) for energy and transport technologies. The project will provide for each specific industrial technology the burdens (air pollution, etc.) associated to its operation, the most significant health and environment impacts, and a monetary valuation of damage costs. The knowledge of externalities associated to industrial technologies will allow to conduct cost-benefit analyses leading to estimations of their "total" costs. Such estimations would be particularly useful for the EU industry in its effort to pursue increased efficiency and for Community environmental policies.
