Objective
SMARTWELD will develop East European welding innovation with West European science, QA and power plant expertise. A partnership led by manufacturers and utilities will develop new consumables for creep resisting steels. Technology will be designed to refurbish old polluting plant in Eastern Europe, improving environmental standards and CO2 emissions. Performance will be validated by microstructural modelling and advanced high temperature testing. SMARTWELD will develop ''smart" consumables which match the steel to be welded, make joints with lower stresses, and produce welds with better reliability. Analysis will demonstrate the promise of trouble-free plant operation, saving inspection and repair costs. Procedures will be developed for manufacture, repair, and welding on to service aged steels. Implementation will include plant refurbishment, manufacture of a new lightweight component, code certification and commercialisation.
