The MTM project will design and produce a multimedia terminal, which includes the general functionality of a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA), a Wireless Telephone, a Video camera, and a portable personal computer (PC). This terminal will be tested through the implementation of enhanced wireless services that will be deployed by private and public companies as well as by end users.
The main objective is to introduce the next generation of terminal communication.
Through a multimedia terminal, it will be possible to talk using a new technology broadband transmission (third generation of GSM) and in the meantime to watch the person with whom the user is talking.
MTM will integrate technologies with the aim of demonstrating the development of a terminal with added value services geared towards the emerging of applications such as data and video signal exchange based on IP protocol, Internet access, e-mail, voice messaging, teleradiology for remote consultation.
The work plan is based on four basic activities, and hence of workpackages:
Management Workpackage - it represents activities that are general to the project or need to be conducted for the full duration of the project; it includes project management, contacts with the European Commission, meetings and reviews;
Technical Workpackages - these represent specific development activities of service applications, which are necessary in order to fulfil the objectives of MTM in the different user areas. The applications will demonstrate that different environments may use the same terminal, which represents the integration of several technologies;
Technology Development Workpackage - this represents the base on which to build the wireless broadband transmission, from HW PDA to W-CDMA circuits, to RF modules for UMTS connection;
User Test-Bed Workpackage - It represents the most important milestone for this project in order to validate and demonstrate the usability of the terminal.
The major result expected by MTM project is to build a prototype that will be the platform on which to implement a range of functions in the next future. This project will produce a solution that is directly exploitable to the customers. The most important steps are to develop a high layer on W-CDMA, service application development and system integration, and a UMTS connection terminal prototype.
