Objective
Urban sprawl is defined as the spread of urban functions and infrastructure into the hinterland. It contributes to local, regional, and global environmental stress. This stress comprises of surface sealing, emission of pollutants due to increased traffic or ecosystem fragmentation. The project seeks to attain across-European overview on the stages and history of urban sprawl, its socio-economic and cultural determinants and its relation to environmental degradation and robust strategies for a transition towards sustainable development. Case studies serve as information base for the identification of patterns of urban sprawl, which are formalized by qualitative models. These models will be used to evaluate policy strategies with respect to the avoidance of unsustainable environmental and socio-economic impacts. In a final step the strategies will be refined for the case study regions to meet their specifics.
