Objective

This thematic network proposal aims to bring together all European centres with radar altimetry expertise to investigate, and ultimately exploit, the commonality that exists between independently proposed satellite missions carrying a radar altimeter or wave measuring radar. GAMBLE seeks to secure the greatest scientific and operational benefits by planning the maximum synergy between European altimeter missions presently being planned (JASON, GANDER, AltiKa, Swimsat, Envisat, JASON 2). GAMBLE addresses several priority themes in the EESD programme of Framework V. It will further the development of the key generic Earth Observation technology (EESD 7.2) of operational satellite altimetry. It will also address the scientific priorities of understanding climate change, and developing the European component of the global observing system (EESD 2.1, 2.4). It will generate socio-economic benefits through improved efficiency and safety in offshore operations and environmental benefits from a better understanding of the meso-scale ocean processes that can be mapped by a network of altimeters.
