Objective
The goal of the proposal is to set-up a competence network with technology development support centres in Germany, UK, Finland and Israel with the aim to assist European industry in their activities to develop and manufacture polymer micro optical components and micro systems. This takes into account the increasing importance of polymer fabrication technologies especially in micro optics and helps to make use of this low cost fabrication technique for a broad range of European companies, especially SMEs. The network covers the full chain necessary to develop and manufacture polymer micro optical systems, starting from materials question, via simulation and product development as well as process and process equipment development to feasibility studies and prototyping up to small series fabrication. It also includes housing and packaging issues.
Objectives:
The objective of this proposal is to increase competitiveness of European Industries in the area of polymer micro optics by the Competence Centre POLYMICRO, which assists European companies in making use of the low cost polymer fabrication technology as well as of polymer micro components to build up new and improved micro optical systems in areas like telecommunication, medical diagnostic, personal identification as well as in the wide area of micro sensors. Thus, the competence Centre will contribute to the economic development of the European Community by promoting the use of micro system technology with low cost polymer devices mainly in industry. It will decrease the entry to this emerging technology especially for SMEs.
Work description:
The workplan with 10 workpackages is designed to ensure a maximum support to European industry which enables them to decide about the use of polymer fabrication technologies as well as of polymer micro optical components in their product development.
There are four main working areas:
1. Dissemination and raising awareness on the competence network. This will be done by preparation of flyers, setting-up web pages, distribution of regular news letters, attending fairs, exhibitions and conferences;
2. proactive customer acquisition, workshops, seminars and training courses will be organized, contacts and visits to companies (more than 300) active in this area will be made. Information on design limitations will be collected, a bibliography of commercial products and main application areas will be collected. Both is made public on the Web. For internal use, a vademecum on R&D activities and on processes and specific know-how in the field of polymer micro optical components and systems will be set-up;
3. Visits of customers, preparing offers and contracts. If there are interests from companies to make use of the offered technology or devices, feasibility studies as well as proposals for concept or design studies as well as work plans will be worked out. It is the aim to end up with about 130 quotations and about 60 contracts with a turnover of about 3.5 Mio Euro;
4. Business plan for the Competence Centre. A business plan will be worked out in order to continue the Competence Centre's activities after the CEC support. Ways toward self funding will be described.
Milestones:
For each workpackage milestones have been defined which result in a tool number of 25 milestones.
The first main MST will be at month 12 which shows that dissemination and awareness was successful demonstrated by at least 88 contacts.
The second MST will be month 24 proofing increasing interest in the CC activities with a number of 83 quotations and more than 50 seminar participants.
At the end of the project we expect 60 contracts with a total turnover of 3.5 Mio Euro.
