Health effects of environmental exposure to asbestos

Objectif

A doctoral training for epidemiologists, statisticians and industrial hygienists. The Department of Occupational and Environmental Epidemiology at the Nofer Institute of Occupational Medicine, Lodz, Poland, offers an excellent opportunity to doctoral fellows for taking part in an exciting project on health effects of environmental contamination with asbestos. The project concerns an ecological hazard area in southern Poland due to asbestos contamination from an indiscriminate use of asbestos wastes by the local community. The main objectives include: (1) assessment of the risk of cancer for the inhabitants of the contaminated area; (2) evaluation of some oxidative stress parameters in blood, taking into account the type and magnitude of asbestos exposure. The studies will cover both cohort tracing and a case-control study. The project is designed for young researchers with a basic knowledge or occupational hygiene, descriptive and analytical epidemiology and biostatistics and meant to be a part of the doctoral training programme. The candidates should be well versed in computer skills (Word, Excel) and have a good command of English. Epidemiologists and occupational hygienists are preferred. While working on the project the trainees will be taking part in environmental study design, exposure assessment for the cohort members and calculation of a cumulated lifetime dose with a data analysis regarding environmental contamination with asbestos. They will also be able to perform on health effects evaluation among local community.
The expected benefits of the training include:
- familiarity with the methodology of exposure assessment used in environmental studies on asbestos
- identification of problems pertaining to assessment of individual dose in environmental studies
- experience in using the methods of analytical epidemiology and risk modeling in relation to asbestos exposure To get more information on the training site, its profile and research lines please visit our website:http://www.imp.lodz.pl
