Dissemination of data on plankton and environmental characteristics using a CD-ROM based data management system for the Atlantic Ocean and the enclosed seas (Mediterranean, Caspian and Aral Sea)

Objetivo

The leading oceanographic institutes of Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and Azerbaijan are holding comprehensive and valuable information on the physical, chemical and biological characteristics of the Atlantic Ocean basin and its enclosed seas (Mediterranean Sea, Caspian Sea and the Aral Sea). To date these data (over 30 expeditions with about 1500 oceanographic stations, 1960-1995) have been practically inaccessible to scientists outside, and even within, the Former Soviet Union. There is a necessity to access these data for global scale analysis and modelling, which is mentioned, in the core international IGBP programs (JGOFS, GLOBEC, GOOS). It is suggested that, for a nominal funding, the archived material can be made available through establishment of scientific links between oceanographic institutes in Western Europe (United Kingdom and Italy) and three NIS countries. This will enable these data to be evaluated, downloaded into a developed database management system, jointly analysed and made available to the international oceanographic scientific community.

The results will be presented in two forms:
1) CD-ROM disks manufactured for the dissemination of the created database among scientists and Institutes all over the world;
2) a series of joint scientific papers with the analysis of biodiversity and biovariability patterns of ecosystems evaluated from the database.
