Objectif The project is aimed at the synthesis and extended experimental investigation of metal oxide compounds forming low-dimensional magnetic structures. These structures include spin-Peierls, spin ladders, Haldane systems, alternating chains, and other. The main representatives of the compounds to be investigated, presently available, are CuGeO3, NaV2O5, (VO)2P2O7, ABX3 family. In addition to studies on these known compounds, a search for novel low dimensional magnetic compounds will also be performed by growing new types of transition-metal oxide single crystals. The main objectives of this project are the study of spin, charge and lattice properties of these compounds, their interactions, and the study of the fundamental questions of low-dimensional magnetism. Among these are the nature of the ground states and excitation spectra, the occurrence and nature of phase transitions, the microscopic mechanisms of the spin-Peierls and charge ordering transitions, and the nature of mesoscopic magnetic defects embedded in a dimerized spin-Peierls matrix and other spin-gap surroundings. The crystal growth will be provided mainly by travelling floating zone techniques and crystallization from the melt. The main experimental techniques to be employed are magnetic susceptibility experiments, electron spin resonance, nuclear magnetic resonance, thermal conductivity and heat capacity measurements, far infrared, optical transmittance and Raman spectroscopy. The interpretation of the results will be based on a combination of the various microscopic and macroscopic experiments, the available literature, and direct discussions with theoreticians from outside the project (existing contacts of the member groups).
