New metal hydrides obtained by high-pressure synthesis: structure and properties

Objetivo

The project aims at the synthesis of new metal hydrides by application of hydrogen pressures of up to several kilobars. The compounds will be characterised with respect to composition, crystal structure, and thermodynamic, magnetic and spectroscopic properties. The experimental techniques include high-resolution X-ray (synchrotron) and neutron powder diffraction, thermogravimetry, differential scanning calorimetry, magnetic susceptibility, and Moessbauer spectroscopy. Basing on the experimental results a crystallochemical model describing the regularities of formation of hydrides in investigated multi-component systems and allowing obtaining new hydride materials with controlled physical and chemical properties will be developed. The results are expected to yield new insight into the chemistry and the physical properties of a class of compounds, which is of interest for reversible hydrogen storage applications. The project has a good chance of success because it benefits from a unique combination of national expertise in the fields of high-pressure synthesis (Russian team), crystal chemistry of intermetallic hydrides (Ukrainian team), structure analysis (Swiss team), and measurements of magnetic properties (Austrian team). The results of the project will be summarised as a written report and submitted to INTAS at the end of the project.
