Application of horizontal continuous casting with vibrating mould for the production of steel strip

Objetivo

Today's method of making steel strip from continuously cast slabs via slab rolling, hot strip rolling through several stages to final cold rolling does not need the original first step of casting ingots and rolling them to slabs. Throughout the world there is a tendency to eliminate still more hot forming steps and end up with the direct casting of steel strip as thin as possible. One method, which would be very useful for a medium size production plant is the horizontal continuous casting process with an oscillated mould. Because of its inherently high oscillation frequencies, a good surface quality can be expected. And because of the fixed and completely closed connection between metal in the tundish and metal in the mould it should be possible to cast thinner strip than with conventional vertical strip casters. An existing machine with possible casting speeds from 0.1 to 5 m/min will be modified for a maximum strand width of 400mm and be used to cast strip within a thickness range from 20 to 40 mm. The experiments shall start with carbon and low-alloy steels. If successful, high-alloy steels shall be also investigated.
