Hydrogeological and Geo-Environmental Simulations: A Contribution to the Algorithms and Advanced Applications

Objetivo

The project aims at:
i. Developing accurate, stable and fast algorithms for numerical simulation of flow and contaminant transport in porous media under complicating conditions, such as deformation of the porous media, non-Newtonian behaviour of the fluids, anisotropy of the porous media, etc.;
ii. Using the developed algorithms for numerical simulation of flow and contaminant transport in porous media for the needs of the scientific expert's assessments in the Hydrogeology and in the Environmental Studies.
The research program is in accordance with the areas of competence and the scientific achievements of the partners, as well as with their ability for innovative work on the particular tasks of the project. The research program includes: development and analysis of algorithms for flow and contaminant transport in porous media under complicating conditions, implementation and validation of these algorithms, as well as their use in the scientific expertise of certain regions. In the algorithmic part the emphasise is on approaches for coupled hydro-mechanical problems; treatments of the nonlinearities, adaptivity, parallelization, accurate and stable discretizations. In the analysis the efforts are concentrated on error estimates, as well as on stability estimates, which are especially important for the considered here problems due to the fact that the hydrogeological parameters are usually only approximately known. The simulations performed within scientific expert's assessments treat important problems, such as: pollutions migration in the vicinity of drinking water wells (aiming at determining the Sanitary Protecting Zone for the wells); coupled geomechanical processes and ground water flow during soil consolidation caused by mining works; infiltration of oil products through unsaturated zone and formation of oil lense on the groundwater table.
The expected results are:
i. New algorithms for the challenging problems specified above;
ii. Stability and error estimates for them;
iii. Validation of the chosen models and the developed algorithms in comparison with analytical results, data from other groups, laboratory and field measurements;
iv. Hydrogeoleogical and geo-environmental simulations for certain regions in Belarus.
The obtained results will be widely disseminated through papers in refereed journals, conference presentations, Internet, proper popularisation at exhibitions and fairs.
