Objectif More than fifteen Large Installations (L.I.) of neutrons (N.) and Synchrotron Radation (S.R.) are operating in the European Union, providing in the field of biology, chemistry, physics, geosciences and industrial applications, sophisticated instrumentation for the study of various materials. An important need for a basic training has been clearly expressed by the community of European users of these L.I. The HERCULES Courses are designed to train young European researchers either PhD students or post-doctoral scientists to optimise the present and future use of these L.I. that is to take advantage of the state-of-the-art instruments for their research work. One of the aims is also to help build a European network of young researchers using n. and S.R. for condensed matter studies. The specificity of the programme is to offer a basic theoretical and experimental training to a multidisciplinary audience composed of young biologists, chemists, physicists, geoscientists and industrial scientists in a unique scientific site in Europe where two European L.I. ESRF and ILL are located with their exceptional instrumental and technical infrastructure, as well as their associated high level human potential. The high level programme proposed here is given by the best European specialists to selected European young researchers in a privileged scientific environment on basic n. and S.R. methods and instruments and their applications to physics, chemistry, biology, industry.
