Objectif The EuroGlobalMap project created a digital, seamless pan-European geographic information collection covering 37 countries. It can be used for spatial analysis, as a geographic backdrop for presentation and visualisation, or as a geographical interface to ground related data in Europe. The project's applications comprise freight fleet management at European level, environmental assessment, strategic planning in both the private and the governmental sector, strategic cross-border security initiatives, crime investigation in conjunction with crime mapping and criminal statistics using geographic information.The project reduced the level of duplicated effort in data production in Europe and can be taken as a model for best practice in providing public sector information for Europe. The EuroGlobalMap project defined common marketing practices and an agreed common business model for data distribution (pricing, licensing), geared towards high-volume dissemination and uncomplicated commercial re-use by the private sector. These common terms, shared by National Mapping Agencies (NMAs), significantly eased access to and exploitation of such public sector information. This was further strengthened by the availability of pan-European information through the private sector partners of NMAs, plus a common point of contact and an Internet service.As the National Mapping Agencies had agreed to render their data according to the EuroGlobalMap specifications at their own expense, the proposal required funding only for the co-ordination of this work and final data integration.
