Objective
Industrial Ecology is an emerging field that addresses the current problems in finding a balance between economic development and environmental protection. Europe now has several universities with strong research programs in Industrial Ecology. Universitie s in the new EU member states wish to build up their research capacity in the field. These research programs are undergoing rapid growth as the need for specialists in sustainability issues becomes increasingly evident. It is important to develop and unify the field of Industrial Ecology across Europe to allow implementation of policy measuresinitiated by the EU. This is particularly true for the new EU member states which face rapid economic development.Industrial Ecology uses scientific methods such as li fe-cycle assessment and material flow analysis to advance sustainable production and consumption. Through ecological design and life-cycle management, it contributes to achieving sustainability at a corporate and administrative level. Industrial Ecology is directly relevant to the EU's sustainability targets and initiatives, including the EU's commitments to sustainable production and consumption at the World Summit for Sustainable Development, Integrated Product Policy, and the Kyoto Protocol. It is propos ed to develop a series of training courses for early stage researchers called the Postgraduate School of Industrial Ecology. Seven training courses are proposed, six of which will be hosted by universities in the new EU member states in Central and Eastern Europe. These countries face immediate environmental and social pressures from economic growth and research expertise in Industrial Ecology needs to be developed rapidly. The course lecturers come from established research programs in Industrial Ecology a cross Europe. This mix of participants will allow European researchers to more easily acquire the knowledge and skills needed to stimulate research in advancing Europe towards sustainability.
