Predictive maintenance and diagnostics of railway power trains

Objective

The railways industry is facing major technical and economical challenges due to the increasing transport demand for passengers and goods (market share of railways will double from 2000 to 2020) that could be only achieved thanks to increased reliability and availability of rolling stocks. ALSTOM-Transport (AT) is convinced that to answer its customers expectations and to improve its competitiveness, it is of prime importance to achieve breakthrough innovations in the field of diagnostic tools and maintenance methodologies for a key element of rolling stocks: the power train.

However, to fulfill, the gap between traditional maintenance methodologies and predictive maintenance that has demonstrated its effectiveness in other industrial areas, ALSTOM-Transport needs to develop tools and methodologies based on knowledge on materials, fault diagnosis and data transfer system that the company does not own today. The objective of the PREMAID project is to set up a transfer of knowledge program between four academic centers located in Italy, Spain Poland and Portugal (UNIBO, UNIOVI, GUT and IT-Coimbra) that have developed complementary expertise sought by ALSTOM-Transport that in return will transfer, its knowledge on development, tests and manufacturing of motors and power electronics for railways applications.

The project will involve 15 experienced researchers during 3 years. They will be mainly hosted (13) in ALSTOM-Transport research centre located in Tarbes for secondment periods from 2 to 24 months. Researchers from AT will carry out complementary researches, validate transfer of knowledge and launch new research programs.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
