Objectif The proposed project and collaboration aims at the development, investigation and implementation of a new concept for atomic clocks based on coherent population trapping (CPT) resonances excited by an optical frequency comb. Special emphasis is placed on the use of frequency shifted feedback (FSF) lasers whose output provides the needed. The cooperation partners perform both extensive experimental as well as theoretical investigations on the research subjects. The laboratories have modern equipment and state-of-the-art laser systems as well as powerful computer systems, permitting necessary thorough investigations of metrology, of laser physics and of coherent interaction of multichromatic laser fields with multilevel atomic systems. The partners will cooperate closely on the proposed tasks. All tasks will be conducted as joint ones, including cooperation involving theory and experiment, transfer of knowledge and exchange of co-workers. The cooperation partners will perform investigations with the following objectives. (i) studies of a FSF laser as a source of controllable coherent optical frequency comb radiation;. (ii) studies of coherent interactions of a tunable optical frequency comb with multilevel atomic systems and observation of the CPT effect in multichromatic fields; (iii) theoretical and experimental studies of CPT resonances as frequency references: investigation of broadening mechanisms and peculiar properties of "light shifts" and collision shifts of CPT resonances excited by an optical frequency comb. (iv) laboratory breadboard construction of atomic clocks based on CPT resonances in a multichromatic field; investigation of their stability and reproducibility and comparison with the laser-pumped gas-cell atomic clocks for the same vapor cells.
