Structure optimisation of SOFC based on Scandia doped Zirconia ceramics for space application

Objetivo

The scientific and technological objectives of the project are to:
- develop basic components for an space vehicle Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) suitable SOFC;
- develop an SOFC suitable for intermediate temperature operation in the range below 750°C;
- analyse the structural stress under cycling conditions and in durability tests.

The specific research activity of the project is to propose optimal design and composition for Intermediate Temperature (650-750°C) Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (IT SOFCs) using basic fracture mechanics principles and advanced materials. The proposed approach will be to tailor the innovative flat plate anode supported IT SOFC with improved power density, high efficiency, and reliability. Scandia doped zirconia with high ionic conductivity will be used in all three main components of the single cell - a cathode, an electrolyte, and an anode. Up to today these designs are not favoured due to concerns about the long-term stability and the costs.

This situation may change following the superior properties of this electrolyte type at intermediate to low operating temperatures and the low-cost access of Eastern European countries to Scandium raw materials. At temperatures near and below 750°C this type of SOFC displays major advantages whilst greatly reducing the effect of degradation.

The main project output will be development of a new SOFC optimal structure leading to robust and inexpensive IT SOFC which can be used in space vehicle. Besides, the mechanical properties of SzSZ ceramics will be analysed experimentally and models for fracture development established. These models are essential as components in life-time prediction models forecasting long-term operational performance. Residual stress distributions will be calculated for SOFC layers under different technological and operational conditions. Special software for the calculation will be elaborated. Statistical distributions of microstructural parameters of scandia-doped SOFC components will be determined. Verified software to simulate damage accumulation and failure of SOFC components will be developed. Complete SOFC cells will be manufactured using cathodes equally suitable for low temperature operation. These cells will be validated in electrochemical single cell measurements and long-term testing. Finally, two-level model of failure and life time of layered SOFC system will be developed to optimise SOFC structure.

The models of degradation prediction will be tested against the results of electrochemical characterisation. The project will interact with the EU 6th Framework Programme projects Real-SOFC and SOFC600. Both cover the reduction of degradation through the use of new and optimised materials and SOFC operation at lower temperatures. The integration of ScSZ as an electrolyte complements the work going on in these projects.
