Manufacturable Power MMICs for Microwave Systems Applications

Objetivo

The European position in GaAs-based power MMICs is lagging some way behind that of the Japanese and Americans. The objective of the MANPOWER project is to redress this balance and to put European industry in a position where it can compete in this increasingly important market, especially in application areas such as communications and automobile electronics.
Two tasks need to be done in order to bring European industry up to a competitive level in the market for power components:
definition and validation of the key technologies for power components based on metal semiconductor field effect transistor (MESFET), high electron mobility transistor (HEMT) and heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT) for system applications from the L-band to 30 GHz;
development and control of the manufacturability of power technologies aiming to implement the tools required for the mass production of low cost power components.

Circuit deliverables have been designed for specific applications in mobile telephones (L-band), very small aperture terminals (VSAT, Ku-band), and short haul radio relay systems (K/Ku-band). User involvement is an essential aspect of the project: user defined circuits have been used to validate the technologies.

The first demonstrator circuits in the L, Ku, K and Ka bands have been processed and are being evaluated. Circuits now designed incorporated inputs from the project's device modelling partners. Demonstrator specifications and packages are being focused to address markets and emerging applications.
The project builds on the experience gained in project 5018, COSMIC, which concentrates on the receiver aspects of communication systems. MANPOWER brings together three major GaAs MMIC manufacturers, together with key users and academic institutions, to tackle the two tasks which urgently need to be done in order to bring European industry up to a competitive level in the market for power components:

- definition and validation of the key technologies for power components based on MESFET, HEMT and HBT for system applications from the L-band to 30 GHz
- development and control of the manufacturability of power technologies aiming to implement the tools required for the mass production of low-cost power components.

The circuit deliverables will be designed for specific applications in mobile telephones (L-band), very small aperture terminals (VSAT, Ku-band), and short-haul radio relay systems (K/Ku-band). User involvement is an essential aspect of the project: user-defined circuits will be used to validate the technologies, and some of them (especially at the L-band) will be manufactured in large quantities and are expected to be extremely cost-competitive by the end of the project.
