Result description
Tool that allows the identification of areas for cost efficient macroalgal (seaweed) and mussel production, based on a combination of hydrodynamic and ecosystem modelling. Based on existing MIKE 3 model, this tool has a particular focus on nutrient availability.Result type

As aquaculture development moves into offshore waters, strong currents can be seen as a two-edged sword for fish farms; on one hand promoting oxgen input and waste dispersion, whilst on the other hand potentially being a vector that increases spread of disease to neighbouring farms. This model builds on existing models to examine the beneficial effects of current speed on dispersal and dilution of waste from marine fish farms and the impact of high currents on the risk of promoting the spread of pathogens from one farm to another.Result type

A 2D and 3D numerical model has been developed through MERMAID to incorporate both poro-elastic and poro-elastoplastic soil constitution into an existing model that measures wave propagation around marine infrastructures, as well as the evaluation of the seabed response (including pore pressure and effective stresses; liquefaction etc.) under dynamic loading. In this project, the model has been further applied to more complicated configurations of marine infrastructures, for example, the Seed Mussel Capture Devices in Wadden Sea.Result type

Result description
When developing innovative designs for an offshore multi-use platform the interaction between the platform and environment needs to be carefully analysed for reasons of design, environmental impact, and assessment of the potential for incorporating multiple functionality. Tools have been developed to assess the interaction of both the installation and operational phases of multi-use platforms (MUPs) with currents, waves, structure and subsoil.Result type

The participatory design process interacted with the conceptual, technical and operational designs carried out in previos MERMAID project work, to lead to actual innovative design concepts for multi-use platforms. Advice is provided to MUP developers to facilitate future processes of development and implementation of offshore MUPsResult type
