Periodic Reporting for period 5 - JIVE (Joint Initiative for hydrogen Vehicles across Europe)

Reporting period: 2021-07-01 to 2022-12-31

The overall objective of JIVE is to advance the commercialisation of hydrogen fuel cell buses through large-scale deployment of vehicles and infrastructure so that by the end of the project (early 2020s) hydrogen buses are commercially viable for bus operators to include in their fleets without subsidy, and that local and national Governments feel empowered to regulate for zero emission public transport systems. The specific project objectives are:
- Deploy fuel cell buses across Europe in large fleets (10 to 35 buses).
- Improve specifications for fuel cell buses, with innovations compared with previous generations.
- Achieve >25% cost reductions versus costs when the project was initiated (2016).
- Demonstrate high availability of fuel cell buses >90%.
- Deploy large HRS (200-400 kg/day) with high availability(>99%).
- Deliver positive environmental impacts by operating FC buses for extended periods.
- Ensure timely bus deployment through early procurement and funding discussions.
- Provide evidence of the suitability of fuel cell buses for wider roll-out.
- Raise awareness of the readiness of fuel cell technology for wider roll-out – with a focus on bus purchasers and regulators.
Key progress during the 5th period of the project includes:

- The buses for 4 sites have been successfully delivered, bringing the total number of buses to 134 (representing 94% of the total JIVE fleet) and a total of 132 buses have been operational (representing 93% of the total project). Gelderland is the only site to not have been able to make much progress during the period due to the incident at its site.
- As of December 2022, close to 10M km have been driven cumulatively by the JIVE 1 and JIVE 2 buses.
- All the technical issues with regards to the Wrightbus FCEBs have been solved.
- Regular refuelling activities have begun at the Birmingham site in Q3 2022.
- Further data analysed in the project and more complete performance data analysis outcomes have been communicated to the JIVE consortium. There have been improvements in the data delivery; however, obstacles remain with some partners (delayed delivery, incomplete data sets, inability to collect the required data, etc.).
- One of the project’s bus KPIs has been successfully reached (project to date): fuel consumption. The JIVE 1 project objective was set at <9 kg/100 km (standard buses) and <14 kg/100 km (articulated buses). As of December 2022 (and looking at the project to date data), consumptions were between 6.4 kg and 9.1 kg (for the standard buses). No articulated buses are deployed under JIVE.
- Dissemination activities have continued successfully, with the organisation of two workshops, one policymaker roundtable, and 11 conference participations for the project. 1 specific JIVE press release was published and in around 50 articles referring to the JIVE projects were issued during the period.
- An updated version of the Best Practice and Commercialisation Report (D3.25) written by the WP3 partners, was submitted to the Clean Hydrogen Partnership and uploaded on the FuelCellBuses website.
- Two User Group events took place during Period 5: the fifth JIVE User Group meeting was held in November 2021 jointly with the JIVE 2 FCEB Training (#2) and in conjunction with ZEB 2021. The sixth JIVE User Group meeting took place in October 2022, in collaboration with the CBEP (Clean Bus Europe Platform) and alongside the FIAA (International Bus and Coach Fair) in Madrid.
- Key activities and dissemination events in the JIVE project have been aligned with JIVE 2 to maximise knowledge exchange between partners. This approach enables the project learnings to have a wider outreach and for both projects to enter in a virtuous cycle of knowledge sharing. Collaborations and knowledge sharing workshops have also continued with other Clean Hydrogen Partnership funded projects (e.g. 3Emotion) and with the CINEA funded project, MEHRLIN.
