Recycling in the industrial process of leather industry by-products

Deliverables

In order to grant significant and useful results, the project was first of all directed to by-products representing consistent weight fractions of the total wastes produced. Fleshing, scraps and hairs were then examined and converted into proteins and fats for fertilizers, animal food and beauty culture. The recovery of enzymes for the tanning process was also investigated by microbial treatment of flaking. In order to improve the economic balance of the project also residual fats were used for producing fat liquoring products and the isolation from hairs of proteins and melanin was considered through extraction with non-polluting solvents. A relevant contribution of Craft Project depends on the European involvement and the effective participation by SME in different countries. Accordingly, the present project four different countries, eight RTD and eleven SME. This made the coordination quite complex but allowed a real time evaluation of the successful tasks as well as the rapid and direct diffusion of the results into a large area of the European Tanning Industry. The organization of the project activity involving frequent interactions among the different partners provided the leather producers in several EC countries with basic information of fundamental significance for future developments.
