Occupational and public exposure to radionuclides
The proceedings of a workshop on "Intakes of radionuclides - occupational and public exposure" held in Avignon, France, from 15 to 18 September 1997, have recently been published. The workshop was jointly organised by the European Commission, DG XII, and national bodies from the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Japan and the United States. Areas of development in internal dosimetry, both for workers and for members of the public, were considered during the workshop, which also presented new information relating to future progress in the field. A total of 200 participants from 28 countries attended the workshop, representing various research institutes and industry. The publication contains the full texts of the papers delivered during the conference, which are presented under the following headings: - Occupational exposure: application of the human respiratory tract model; - Occupational exposure: monitoring of workers; - Public exposure; - Developments in biokinetic models: inhalation of radionuclides; - Developments in biokinetic models: embryo and foetus; - Developments in biokinetic models: systemic activity; - Physical dosimetry; - Treatment of accidental intakes of radionuclides; - Developments in measurement and dose assessment techniques; - Inter-laboratory inter-comparisons on measurement and dose assessment techniques. The proceedings conclude with a summary of the panel discussion held at the close of the workshop. This addresses some of the more general issues that arose during the meeting, and seeks to identify the main directions for work in the coming years.
