The European Commission, DG XIII, has recently published the 1998 Progress and Prospects report on EU projects carried out within the language engineering sector of Telematics Applications Programme. These report provides new and updated information on these projects, which aim to be user driven and application oriented, and were designed to stimulate and respond to market needs. The report also looks forward to the Fifth Framework Programme and future research in the language engineering field. The report provides an insight into the importance and potential of language engineering as the new millennium approaches and reviews developments in the field in recent years. It also provides details of the language resources and development tools, language technologies, language-enabled applications, and pilot services that have been developed within the Fourth Framework Programme. Important market sectors where language engineering is expected to have a major impact in the new millennium are also highlighted. The report contains the following sections: - Achievements in the EU; - Future market prospects; - Towards the Fifth RTD Framework Programme; - The language engineering sector; - Research and technological development prospects.
