European Super-conducting Quantum Information Processor

Objetivo

The overall objective of EuroSQIP is to develop a 5-8-qubit quantum information processor (QIP) capable of:
- running elementary algorithms for search, quantum Fourier transform, teleportation, and simulation.
- demonstrating quantum state control of a macroscopic multi-partite system
- demonstrating entanglement and entanglement transfer
- providing storage of quantum information
- providing quantum communication interfaces
- running simple quantum error correction schemes for suppression of decoherenece.

This will be implemented and performed within two major tasks involving hardware and software platforms based on Josephson junction (JJ) technology for 1) charge-phase and 2) flux qubits, representing two major lines with proven 1-qubit, and emerging 2-qubit, gate functionality. The platforms will allow control and readout of individual qubits, allow two-qubit gates with fixed and switchable couplings, and contain on-chip circuitry for storage and internal and external communication of quantum information. A particular task will be to investigate and design scalable hybrid systems including nanotraps for atoms and ions and quantum optical components in order to integrate the best of different QIPC approaches.

The Tasks will be organised within a work programme emphasizing the essential functionalities and integrating experiment and theory. The main work packages are: o Quantum processors o Readout of quantum information o Storage and communication of quantum information o Systems integration and demonstration o Implementation of algorithms and protocols By designing and implanting simple but functional hardware platforms, EuroSQIP intends to find out what it really takes to begin scaling up a qubit system in practical solid-state projects, including designs toward hardware platform portability, which would form a basis for transfer of knowledge and for exploitation - a first contribution to the emerging field of quantum engineering.
