Mesoscopic Quantum Noise: from few electron statistics to shot noise based photon detection

Final Report Summary - MEQUANO (Mesoscopic Quantum Noise: from few electron statistics to shot noise based photon detection)

The MeQuaNo , Mesoscopic Quantum Noise, project has developed innovative approaches where current noise is used to study the quantum statistics of electrons at a single electron level, and is exploited for new applications where the noise is the signal.
Among the most relevant achievements is the realization of single electron sources, the electron analog of single photon sources, where electrons are injected in a conductor in a form of a new quantum wave called Leviton, as attested from noise measurements. Noise measurements have also been exploited to realize the first quantum tomography of a single electron in a conductor.
On the practical side, the MeQuaNo project has produced radiation detectors up to the THz (Tera Herz) frequency range where the current noise of an illuminated conductor is the signal which measures the radiation intensity.
