Objetivo
One of the main premises of the proposed project (both in education/training and research) is based on the view that without corresponding progress in basic understanding/research there is little chance for progress in any applications involving of turbule nce. The focus of the proposed project is multi-fold. Firstly, the emphasis is on problems of distinctly fundamental nature which are at the heart of the physics of any turbulent flow. Secondly, the priority is given to problems with direct impact on appli cations. Thirdly, the choice is on problems with the stress on the most central cornerstone problems of conceptual nature, basic physical mechanisms of turbulence with the emphasis on qualitative aspects. This main concern is the study of turbulence itself (per se), rather than the multitudes of turbulence models. This as all other activities will involve special collaborative efforts in European and other countries. Among the deliverables from this project will be an advanced lecture course on ¿A conceptua l introduction to turbulence¿ based on the chair holders new book (in final stage of preparation). The present project is based to a large extent on the ideas described in this book. The course and the book are designed for the widest audience including st udents and researchers in basic and applied sciences where the role of turbulence is of primary importance. Together with auxiliary lecture courses and other teaching aids this will serve the education for many years after the termination of this project. Another deliverable from this project is the implementation in the Department of Aeronautics of Imperial College London (and other EU countries) of unique advanced experimental techniques for studying turbulence which have been developed by the chair hold er. Finally international conferences/workshops will be organized primarily for the benefit and training of young researchers.
