Foldable, Adaptable, Steerable, Textile Wing Structure for Delivery of Capital Loads

Obiettivo

FASTWing CL is to developing a navigated parafoil system for carrying loads of up to 6 tons. FASTWing CL is the
successor of the FP5 programme. FASTWing which was completed successfully in June 2005. The latter has developed
a prototype demonstrator capable to fly autonomous and successfully demonstrated this technology by dropping loads
of up to 3 tons. Never before such a heavy payload was dropped by a parafoil in Europe.Autoflug GmbH, a small and
medium-size enterprise is the coordinator of FASTWing.FASTWing CL focuses on the development of a high
performance parafoil for heavy loads with a high steering accuracy and soft landing capability. The necessary advanced
design and simulation tools are developed in FASTWing CL. While FASTWing developed and demonstrated the full
scaleparachute system, FASTWing CL will develop the capabilities needed for a fully autonomously controlled flight
of the parafoil. At the same time the payload range shall be extended from 3 to 6 tons. The necessary actuator
technology, flight management software with GPS/Galileo integration and parafoil deployment control procedure
will be developed. This approach is a clear step beyond the state of the art. Such a system doesn't existing in
Europe today. All functions of the developed system will be demonstrated and validated in a real drop test.
FASTWing technology will allow a precise delivery of heavy loads, e.g. mobile medical aid units in disaster areas
(earth quakes, flooding (e.g. tsunamis) which are not accessible overland. In a second step exploitation of the
technology is expected for aircraft and space vehicle rescue systems are targeted in accordance with
European Space Agencies future planning scenario. The duration of the project will be 36 month plus 2 month
for finalization by the coordinator. The overall estimated budget is 4.969 Mio. including coordination costs.'
