Building bridges between EU member and candidate states in maritime research on transport within the frames of European research area

Final Report Summary - EUROMAR-BRIDGES (Building bridges between EU Member and Candidate States in maritime research on transport within the frames of European research area)

The EUROMAR-BRIDGES project aimed to contribute to the improvement of the competitive advantages of the European maritime transport sector, including shipbuilding. This goal was achieved through the identification of potential valuable contributions from EU Candidate Countries, Russia and Turkey in maritime research and European initiatives.

EUROMAR-BRIDGES overall objectives were to:
1. increase cooperation and intensify efforts towards improved competitiveness and technological excellence;
2. identify potential participants in research and development (RD) of the sector, originating from candidate countries and new Member States, and facilitate their involvement through provision of information related to European maritime projects;
3. promote the idea of the European research area at a national level;
4. pinpoint benefits from cooperation in solving problems of the sector and ensure active participation of new member states and candidate countries towards sustainable maritime development;
5. integrate innovation in maritime transport by promoting the mentioned countries novelties, given that they were considered as a driving force of sustainable growth.

It was estimated that the project could contribute in meeting the demands of European transport policy via the enhanced exchange of information, technology transfer and research cooperation.

Various workshops were organised to raise awareness towards achieving the project objectives. Moreover, EUROMAR-BRIDGES included events devoted to the presentation of new project layouts, which resulted in the elaboration of specific proposals for future research. The communication and cooperation of the participants was facilitated by the construction of the project website. Finally, ten contact points were established and further developed.

The project was successful in spite of its short duration. The various communication activities resulted in rising awareness regarding the importance of joint RD activities at the European level. In addition, dissemination and exploitation of information was stimulated while stakeholders’ knowledge regarding management and administrative issues was increased.
