Objetivo
The main objective of INSWAM-AL is to disseminate existing knowledge and assist the scientific community of
Albania and Bosnia-Herzegovina, decision makers and stakeholders in implementing appropriate methodologies regarding
integrated management of industrial and municipal solid wastes as well as demolition debris in order to minimize environmental impacts
and pave the way for a sustainable development. The issues to be tackled, through specific
case studies and activities, so that a set of management criteria and a National Strategy Plan are developed, include: (1) Best Available Techniques
(BATs) referred to waste management, in relation to the IPPC Directive of the EU, will be overviewed and disseminated.
(2) Standard industrial solid waste characterisation techniques (US EPA, DIN, NEN, etc) used for the characterisation of
wastes, determination of acid generation capacity and toxicity of wastes as well as the bio-available fractions of
hazardous compounds within wastes and contaminated soils, will be introduced, (3) The LCA concept, regarding products,
wastes, facilities and disposal routes will by elucidated. (4) The Risk analysis methodology based on a source - pathway -
target principle will be presented so that the quantification of risk is enabled and decision making regarding appropriate
management is assisted. Based on all above, sustainability indicators and scenarios will be established and presented
for the revival of specific relevant sectors of the Albanian industry. Special attention will be paid towards the
reinforcement of the legal framework of the country. Emphasis will be given to mapping research needs and the
introduction of issues related with preparation and submission of proposals under FP6 and especially the INCO
programme. Finally, organization of thematic young scientist schools is planned to disseminate knowledge regarding
industrial solid waste management and initiate sustainable development of the industry.
