Lidar tropospheric study at Alomar

Objetivo

ALOTROPOLID offers the applicant. Max Frioud as researcher the unique training opportunity during a stay at the ALOMAR Observatory, in Northern Norway. The applicant has experience from his recent Ph.D. work in the lidar technique and especially in the use of processing algorithms describing the vertical aerosol distribution and its effects under different weather situations in Switzertand. At ALOMAR, the Arctic Lidar Observatory for Middle Atmosphere Research, it will be possible to extend this knowledge with deeper experimental skills and a thorough extend of the used theoretical approaches describing aerosols in general and especially the climatological effect of cirrus clouds.

The applicant will work with the new troposphere lidar at ALOMAR in close collaboration with the group of J.E. Kristjansson from Oslo University, who is modelling the effects of Arctic cirrus particles on earth and apos;s climate, and with a group of scientists at NILU (Norwegian Institute for Air Research), who are both experimentally and theoretically investigating different kinds of aerosols and their impact on the ecosystem. In focus for these investigations are both anthropogenic and natural aerosols, which are detected both by remote sensing (e.g. LIDAR) and chemical methods. In this context NILU stands for an interdisciplinary approach to the research field. Additionally the close contact to European and non-European groups with international reputation in aerosol research in the stratosphere and the mesosphere opens for the opportunity to combine theoretical and experimental methods, which were established in rather different height regimes in the Arctic atmosphere.
