METALLURGICAL AND ECONOMIC STUDY OF PRETREATMENT PROCESSES FOR HEMATITE PIG IRON.

Objetivo

THE PIG-IRON PRETREATMENT PROCESSES CURRENTLY BEING DEVELOPED NEED TO BE STUDIED FROM NOT ONLY A METALLURGICAL, BUT ABOVE ALL AN ECONOMIC STANDPOINT, WITH DUE REGARD TO WORKING CONDITIONS IN EUROPEAN STEELWORKS AND, IN PARTICULAR, THE REDUCTION IN THE SCRAP-MELTING CAPACITY OF THE CONVERTER THAT CAN RESULT FROM PIG-IRON PRETREATMENT. OTHER PROCESSES THAT REDUCE THE AMOUNTS OF IMPURITIES IN THE STEEL (CONVERTER OR LADLE TREATMENT) SHOULD ALSO BE TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION.

THE AIMS OF THE RESEARCH ARE:
- TO STUDY, AT EUROPEAN LEVEL, THE FEASIBILITY OF DIFFERENT METHODS OF PRODUCING STEELS CONTAINING VERY SMALL AMOUNTS OF IMPURITIES SUCH AS PHOSPHORUS AND SULPHUR. STRESS WILL BE LAID ON OPERATIONS FOR PRETREATING THE PIG-IRON IN THE LADDLE OR CONVERTER USING MAINLY LIMEBASED MIXTURES. OTHER PROCESSES INCLUDING STEEL TREATMENTS WITH NEVERTHELESS ALSO BE INVESTIGATED;
- TO CARRY OUT AN ECONOMIC STUDY OF THE PRODUCTION OF THESE LOW-IMPURITY STEELS WITH A VIEW TO PIN-POINTING PROCESSES THAT ARE BEST SUITED TO THE DESIRED STEEL GRADE AND OPTIMIZED TO TAKE ACCOUNT OF WORKING CONDITIONS IN EUROPEAN STEELWORKS. SUCH A STUDY, INITIALLY DEVOTED TO PIG-IRON PRETREATMENT, SHOULD NEVERTHELESS FORM PART OF A BROADER FRAMEWORK EMBRACING THE ENTIRE PRODUCTION LINE FROM SINTERING AND THE BLAST FURNACE TO CONTINUOUS CASTING.

DATA RELATING TO PROCESSES STUDIED IN THE COURSE OF OTHER RESEARCH PROJECTS WILL ALSO BE USED IN THIS RESEARCH.
