Objetivo
This research project will use two existing three-high rolling mills and their associated pressurized water cooling systems to extend knowledge concerning the non-steady state heat transfer between steel surfaces and the quenching medium during cooling. This would be of considerable value in controlled cooling of coiled spring steels for cold forming. Preferred microstructures that will increase the fatigue strength of these spring steels, as well as providing extensive energy savings, can be obtained using residual rolling heat in combination with precise cooling regimes.
