PRECISE MEASUREMENT OF INTERNAL STRESSES WITHIN MATERIALS USING PULSED NEUTRONS

Objetivo

The objective of this programme is to develop a routine, non destructive method of measuring internal stresses deep within engineering materials and components. This will be achieved by development of the technique of neutron strain measurement, in order to prove its value as a design and problem-solving tool, both technically and economically, for manufacturing industry.

An understanding of internal stresses is of fundamental importance in predicting component lifetimes, and hence this project will enable significant improvements to be made in both component design and manufacture. Increased market competition and the drive towards more responsible use of the world's resources are forcing a more radical approach to design. The need to satisfy stricter performance specifications, and to harness effectively novel materials, threatens to extend the design/manufacture/test cycle time, and it is here that a comprehensive internal stress measurement capability will have a major impact.

This project will use the world's leading pulsed neutron source, where beam time will be made available to the project. The time-of-flight neutron technique provides significant advantages over existing reactor techniques, leading to improved, easier, more cost-effective measurements over a wide range of materials and components.
