TO IMPROVE HEAT TRANSFER BY A NEW TYPE OF INDUCTION FURNACE

Objetivo

The design, construction and testing of a new induction channel furnace for aluminium alloy smelting, to increase power density to 1.5 Mw/t of molten metal, the amount of metal being reduced in comparison with reverbatory type furnaces (+1,950 Kwh/t of molten metal).
Annual energy saving is projected at 1,000 TOE at project level for an annual throughput of 8,000 T.
While an aluminium melting capacity of 2 T/h with a 5 T bath capacity,a capacity of 2,7 T/h is now under discussion. However in order to meet this the furnace rating will have to be increased to 1,200 Kva using two 600 Kw inductors. Simultaneously measurements will have to be taken for comparison of projected performance data of the new furnace concept with data on the user's gas fired furnaces which are still in operation. Any decision on construction of the new facility must await such results. During trial operation with a 600 kW twin channel furnace prototype demonstrated on the user's premises, rapid furnace erosion on the fireproof refractory lining near the top of the channel became evident, indicating that limits for current density and electrical power must not be exceeded. These limit values are dependent on the size and surface of the channel. To ensure that this will not re-occur a comprehensive, two-dimensional computer programme has been developed enabling power datato be calculated as accurately as possible. An established furnace manufacturer took over construction of the new design which is to be tested in an aluminium processing plant in England.
The design principle is intended to improve heat transfer from the induction channel to main furnace bath, keeping the induction channel clean at all times.
Higher power density combined with +-1% reduction in metal loss improves plant efficiency comparative to conventional furnaces, due to lower heat loss.
