THE USE OF LATENT HEAT OUT OF WASTE AIR FROM A DRYER IN A BRICKWORK

Objetivo

The aim of the project is to demonstrate the technical and economic feasibility of condensing wet air from a dryer for bricks and using the energy to dry for brick making.
A final report for this "pilot project" was received in December 1992.
Because of the fact that the system is mounted on one drying chamber, the full investment is not yet done. There are now 12 drying chambers. Depending of the economic results, more chambers can be provided with this system.
The desired values of energy recovery were not achieved (only 34 as against the 950 TOE/year predicted). The project must therefore be considered economically not interesting.
The installation consist of an air-air exchanger for cooling down waste air by external air. The warm external air is used as primary air for drying, together with cooling air from the tunnel kiln. After the air-air exchanger is an air water exchanger mounted. In this exchanger the waste air from the dryer is cooled down under the condensation temperature. The heat and the latent heat of the water in the waste air are transformed into warm water. This water is the supply for a isolated buffer tank. Water from this tank is used as supply for a steam boiler. The steam is necessary to get a good plasticity of the clay for brickmaking. Steamed bricks have less drying cracks and the warm formed bricks dry faster and more efficient.
