Objetivo
TO DEVELOP A METHOD OF TREATING WASTE ACID TARS BY COMMERCIALLY VIABLE AND ENVIRONMENTALLY SAFE PROCEDURES.
THE INVESTIGATIONS WILL INVOLVE:
(A) NEUTRALISATION BY ALKALINE MATERIALS, SOME OF WHICH MAY THEMSELVES ORIGINATE AS WASTE PRODUCTS, FOLLOWED BY REMOVAL OF MOISTURE.
AFTER MACERATION AND/OR GRINDING TO A FINELY-DIVIDED STATE, THE DRIED MATERIAL WILL BE INCORPORATED INTO BITUMASTIC TYPE PRODUCTS TO GIVE A FINAL PRODUCT HAVING IMPROVED PROPERTIES OF ELASTICITY,COHESION, TEMPERATURE SUSCEPTIBILITY AND ADHESION TO SMOOTH SURFACES. THIS PRODUCT WILL RETAIN THE EXCELLENT WATERPROOFING CHARACTERISTICS OF THE BITUMASTIC AND SHOULD FIND APPLICATION IN THE FIELDS OF SEALANTS, BUILDING MASTICS, ROOFING , AND, WHEN MIXED WITH SUITABLE COARSE AGGREGATES, FOR SPECIALISED ROAD SURFACING AND BRIDGE DECKING.
(B) NEUTRALISATION AS IN (A) ABOVE, FOLLOWED BY DRYING, GRINDING AND EXTRACTION WITH SUITABLE SOLVENTS TO RECOVER TECHNICAL GRADE SURFACTANTS. THESE WILL FIND APPLICATION IN THE FIELDS OF SOLUBLE METAL WORKING FLUIDS AND LOW TOXICITY DRILLING MUDS FOR CRUDE OIL EXPLORATION AND PRODUCTION.
(C) STRAIGHT TREATMENT INVOLVING DISPERSION WITH OTHER WASTES TO YIELD A STABLE SOLID PRODUCT WHICH WILL FIND APPLICATION IN THE FIELDS OF SOUND-DEADENING UNDERSEAL FOR MOTOR VEHICLES TOGETHER WITH THE LIBERATION OF USEFUL MATERIALS.
(D) DISPOSAL IN MIXED WASTES STREAMS UTILISING THE ACIDITY OF ACID TARS TO ACHIEVE THE CONDITIONS WHERE CERTAIN USEDUL PRODUCTS ARE RECOVERED, AT A NET COST EQUIVALENT TO THE CURRENT COSTS OF DISPOSING OF ACID TARS DIRECT TO LAND-FILL.
