Background maritime contribution to atmospheric pollution in Europe

Ziel

A new multi-disciplinary, collaborative network of coastal research stations located mainly on the Western periphery of Europe is the aim of this project. The main objective is to study specific and microphysical properties of predominately maritime air masses in their passage from the Atlantic Ocean over Western Europe.

The network will provide a unique facility for research by environmental scientists in Europe, relevant also for the IGBP'S IGAC activities on north atlantic study. The coastal field stations used are: Mace Head in Western Ireland; Aveiro in Portugal; Porspoder (near Brest) in France. The two Scandinavian sites proposed at Saeby (near Gothenburg), Sweden and at Lista on the southern tip of Norway are well positioned to sample the northerly Atlantic and Arctic air masses flowing into northern Europe.

The project allows for the measurements of the spatial maritime air masses at coastal field stations sited along the Western ocean frontage of Europe, to be made. Intensive field measurement campaigns will permit budget/flux estimates to be made for nitrogen, sulphur and chlorine. Chemical composition of size differentiated aerosol will be determined for background marine air. The proposed work will afford the opportunity of making simultaneous measurements of several aerosol species (in both gaseous and particulate form).

The project also permits sustained measurements in background marine air of the postulated interlinked parameters of dimethysulphide (DMS), methanesulphonate acid (MSA), SO2 and cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) concentration.
