Seismic Fuse - Components for Reinforced Concrete Structures in Earthquake Prone Regions

Objetivo

A low cost method of reducing the impact of earthquakes on reinforced concrete structures has been developed and is subject to international patent protection. This involves the use of inserts of known ductility and yield strength fitted between reinforcing bar sections using mechanical full strength threaded couplers. Limited experimentation has demonstrated the effectiveness of the concept. However, much experimental and computational work is needed to provide a comprehensive guide to the application of the invention in the design and engineering of structures. A series of tests with concrete frames using shaking tables is required together with extensive computation/modelling to cover sufficient cases. Such experimental and modelling work will simulate real earthquake conditions as closely as possible. The invention enables the European codes of practice for seismic design to be implemented at low cost and therefore has very large potential social and economic impact.
