Development and assessment of methods for the detection of adulteration of olive oil with hazelnut oil.

Objectif

Olive oil constitutes the basic income source for around 2 million people who live predominantly in the less-favoured regions of Southern EU. The cost of olive oil adulteration with hazelnut oil could be evaluated around 4 million Euros per year that is detracted from the farmers' income. The proposal will analyse emergent and well-established physical-chemical techniques and methods for detecting this adulteration. The project will develop and set up methods based on GC-MS, LC-GC, 180 and 2H-SIRMS, lH- and 2H-SNIF-NMR, 13C-NMR, FT-MIR, FT-Raman. The most remarkable deliverables are the method protocols, the training courses for analysts, databases with information of the characterised edible oils, and pre-normative of valuable methods. Four milestones have been planned to make decision after each method had been evaluated by peer laboratories and blind trials. 14 partners of 7 EU countries constitute the consortium.
