DRILLING AND EXPLOITATION OF GEOTHERMAL RESOURCE AT SAMALUS NEAR BARCELONA FOR GREENHOUSE HEATING

Objetivo

To heath greenhouses (9 Ha to be built), thermal establishment and industrial area in Samalus-La-Garriga, 50 km North of Barcelona.
The geothermal well has been drilled at 905 m depth in the "Valles Graben", it is crossing the productive reservoir in fractured granite. Geothermal water (directly used in the heating circuits) represents an expected annual energy saving estimated to 6.000 TOE, with a corresponding payback of 4 to 5 years if water is distributed to the drinking water network after thermal use.
The thermal adaptation to be designed for each industrial user will be a "demonstration" utilization in itself.
First short-term pumping tests allow very good production hopes. Tests during three days at 25 l/sec (1,6 m water level drawndown) and three more days at 50 l/sec (15 m) have been run. Further tests at 75 and 100 l/sec, and long term tests will be developed nearly.
Geology of the graben "Del valles" is well known from 7 delineation wells but hydrodynamics of the reservoir linked to a big faulting structure less known. Geothermal water will be discharged in the river or used for agricultural purposes because of its low salt content (0.5 mg/l). Expected flow-rate (200 m3/h) and 80 to 90 deg.c. temperature are based on previous work and tests on exploratory wells.
