Objetivo Reactor technology is a key technology, not only for the chemical and pharmaceutical industry, but also for the society as a whole. Reactor technology concerns the design of reactors. The choice of reactor, i.e. type and operation conditions, determines the effectiveness of the overall production process. A good reactor design offers high yield and selectivity and optimal performance with respect to environment and safety. E.g. raw material and energy consumption and waste production are effected by a proper reactor design. To satisfy the increasing demand for improved performance (higher throughput, higher selectivity, higher product quality, reduction of impurities, etc.) of existing (and new) processes, new powerful simulation tools have to be developed. The research within the training program aims at developing reactor models that are based on:1. Knowledge based models', i.e. based on accepted mathematical descriptions of the 'laws of nature' such as conservation of mass, thermodynamics, kinetics, chemical physical properties of the involved compounds and so on;2. Data driven models', i.e. based on Artificial Neural Networks, Fuzzy Logic and Genetic Algorithms, which define input-output relations on measured data only. The expectation is that the predictive power of the to be developed hybrid models will be higher than state-of the-art models resulting in better process control and improved performance at lower costs. The research work comprises1 ) the building of descriptive models,2) the collection of chemical physical data as well as of3) the collection of real process data in order to4) validate and improve the developed model.A team of experts from different areas including as process engineers. Mathematical experts and modeling specialists will guide the fellow. In view of the generic nature of the proposed research, the work constitutes an eminent opportunity for training young and ambitious post-docs in the exciting field of process modeling and optimizing of production processes in an industrial research environment.
