Construction of an electromagnetic calorimeter for the HERMES experiment at HERA - DESY

Objetivo

The HERMES-experiment is designed to study the spin structure of the nucleon at HERA - DESY. It will measure spin dependent deep inelastic scattering from the proton and neutron, using the longitudinally polarized electron beam of the HERA storage ring at beam energies of about 30 GeV. For these measurements internal polarized gas targets of hydrogen, deuterium and 3He will be used.

The x-dependence of the proton and neutron spin-dependent structure functions will be measured with high precision. In addition, HERMES will detect leading hadrons from spin-dependent deep inelastic scattering. This provides information on the relative contribution of the valence versus sea quarks to the spin of the nucleon. The experiment will lead to an experimental verification or disproval of QCD-based models of nucleons, in particular on the spin structure of nucleons.

The following activities will be performed in the framework of the project: development of a Monte-Carlo programme to simulate the full HERMES experiment including the calorimeter; Monte-Carlo calculation in order to fix design criteria for the calorimeter, like the influence of a preshower radiator and of dead layers between the blocks; quality control of the 900 lead glass blocks (mechanical dimensions, light attenuation, radiation hardness) in order to ensure good homogenuity and long life time of the detector; and mounting of calorimeter modules.
