Public health and pollution in Russia (with special reference to regions in ecological crisis)

Exploitable results

The Russian Federation provides a unique opportunity to study relationships between environmental pollution and public health. The integral assessment of the medical ecological state of Russia is the conduct of the project. Such a research could be performed through various approaches and techniques of mathematical cartographical modelling that enable us to integrate and visualize the extensive and diverse ecological and medical information. A complex of algorithms for multidimential mathematical classifications of estimative and typological character has been worked out. This study has been conducted both for the Russian Federation on the base of its 75 administrative units and for the regions in ecological crisis. Radioactive pollution of the territory after Chernobyl disaster still impact seriously on the population and environment of the European part of Russia and negative effect on public health have been shown in different regions (increasing of mortality rate, numbers of cancer morbidity etc). Braynsk oblast was taken as a model ot investigate the medical ecological consequences of Chernobyl accident on the base of its 29 administrative units. For the complex characteristics of the state of the environment and public health, various standard parameters were taken from state statistics. A series of cartographic images, reflecting the quality of the environment, causes of moridity and mortality, related to groups of diseases and changes of such characteristics within given time periods was produced and analyzed.
