Multiple fracture of solids : developments of a new theory based on modern concepts of non-linear science and applications to the intermediate term prediction of earthquakes

Objetivo

The formation and evolution of cascades of defects and cracks in solids with various properties under the general type of loading will be considered using modern methods of fracture mechanics, materials science and non-linear science: bifurcation theory, intermediate asymptotics, and renormalisation groups.

Fracture and large earthquakes will be associated with global collapse of the cascade and local instabilities of cracks. Forming the cascade will be associated with acoustic emission in multiple fracture, foreshocks and aftershocks.

Limits of similarity and self-similarity for the evolution of cascades will be explored. The results will lead simultaneously to new interpretations of seismic data and acoustic emission in the fracture of structures.
