Photo-assisted preparation of metal/oxide composites: influence of the defects created in the oxide carriers on the nanostructure of metal particles

Objetivo

This project presents an unconventional approach in the preparation of sensors and catalysts, especially those used in environmental technology such as automotive exhaust and flue gases from power plants.

The aim of the project is to study the nanostructure of metal particles (palladium, rhodium, platinum) deposited on semiconducting oxides, such as CeO2, either pure or supported on insulating oxide carriers (Al2O3, SiO2).

The metal deposition will involve two different procedures: light-assisted metallization via electron-hole pairs generation in the semiconducting particles immersed in the metal precursor solution; and the laser-assisted creation of atomic defects in the semiconducting particles before metal deposition through an electroless procedure. In both cases, the selectivity of the metal deposition is expected from the selective response of the semiconducting oxide to photoactivation. At first the attention will be focused on palladium deposition on pure ceria and silica-supported ceria.
