Bird migration, its strategies and evaluation with respect to the present environmental impact of human activities, from Russia through Poland to Western Europe and from Germany to Italy

Objetivo

From 1901 to 1945 bird migration was intensively studied by the former Vogelwarte Rossitten in East Prussia, now known as the bird station Rybachi in Russia. Due to these activities bird migration along the axis from Russia through Poland to Western Europe was well-known and population sizes and trends of population development could be monitored. The present situation is largely unknown because co-operation between ornithological institutes in Russia, Poland and western countries has been weak.

Since bird populations in central and Western Europe are dramatically declining, an investigation of populations migrating between Russia and western and southern Europe is greatly needed. Results obtained would be very valuable for biologists, ecologists, conservationists and politicians. The objectives of the project is to initiate a long-term joint programme between Russia, Italy and Germany for the study of bird migration and bird population developments between Russia and Western Europe for at least a five-year period. Results will become an essential basis for bird conservation in Western Europe and Russia and will very much contribute to the Bonn Convention for the protection of migrating animals.
